PUPPETEER PLAY

Every senior year English goes to see a play.  The year before us, they went to see Jersey Boys.  This year, we went to see a version of Frankenstein that was done with all puppets.  It was really interesting.  There was no dialogue at all.  Obviously, they couldn’t move all the puppets around with strings and such.  So there was a group of black clad puppeteers who moved around everything, called “alchemists,” who were supposedly standing in for fate.  Another interesting part, at least to me, was that the same actor played both Victor Frankenstein and the monster.  I had heard that an actor had actually dropped out of the role when he heard about this due to creative differences or something like that.  A lot of the new versions of Frankenstein for TV and the movie often play up the duality between Frankenstein and the monster so I really liked this.  It seemed to be a point Mary Shelly wanted to get across in the original novel, but ran out of time or pages.  I still think her husband Percy Shelly had a lot to do with the writing of that novel, but that’s neither here nor there.  It doesn’t really matter who wrote it if you like it.  It gave birth to all these movies, TV shows, and plays that I’ve also enjoyed.
